Top Potential NBA 2K22 Cover Stars

Jun-09-2021 PST

Although NBA 2K22 has not yet been officially announced, it is expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks. While the NBA 2K franchise hasn't been officially unveiled at E3 in years — most recently in 2013 — E3 seems to be doubling down nicely as a reminder that information from the 2K franchise is coming soon. If recent years dictate, cover star announcements should be just around the corner in July, and while NBA 2K21's stars have been relatively easy to predict, options are more up in the air this year. However, some obvious choices stand out for NBA 2K22.

Last year's iteration, NBA 2K21, had three separate covers; Including the record edition with Damian Lillard, a next-generation edition starring Zion Williamson, and the Mamba Forever edition in honor of the late Kobe Bryant. If this pattern continues, fans can expect three different titles for NBA 2K22.

Dirk Nowitzki For The Legend Edition

So far, the rumor mill has been relatively quiet about NBA 2K22, but a piece of information floating around in a leak indicates that Dirk Nowitzki is on the cover of the Legend Edition. To be honest, that doesn't seem that far-fetched. Nowitzki has the stats to support a campaign for the Legend Edition cover. He is sixth in two great categories: all-time points, ahead of Wilt Chamberlain, and in a defensive rebound, ahead of Hakim Aliwan.

While he may only have one championship ring to his name, he has spent all of his time in the Dallas Mavericks and has never moved. In addition, Nowitzki is a 14-time NBA All-Star, which puts him in the company of all-time greats like Karl Malone and Michael Jordan. Sure, there are endless options for the Legend Edition, but it's unlikely you'll hear any complaints if Nowitzki gets that honor.

Bradley Beal For Standard Edition

It's hard to believe, but the 27-year-old has been in the league for nine years. Since joining the league, Beal has steadily improved year after year, and this season he has done his best so far, averaging over 30 PPGs in both the regular season and post-season. Although the Wizards were eliminated from the playoffs very quickly by the 76th, Bale emerged as a serious goalscorer and leader on his team. Since Damian Lillard was featured in NBA 2K21, this year could follow suit and pick another player with years in the game.

While there are many veterans that fit the bill, many of them already have their own coverage. As such, this might be the perfect time for 2K Sports to show some love to Bale, during their best personal season.

Luka Doncic For Next-Gen Edition

May this year's covers show much love for the Dallas Mavericks. While it may seem strange to have two covers with players like Doncic and Nowitzki who have remarkably similar careers thus far, it could also be the exact reason behind the success. Since Zion Williamson covered the next generation of consoles last year, it's only natural that another great player under 25 will be chosen this year to represent the next generation.

Currently, Doncic is putting in a great performance in the playoffs and regular season. If 2K Sports is looking for a young cover star, you won't find one much better than Doncic, but there are arguments for the likes of Trae Young, Devon Booker or Jayson Tatum.
